This newest research program was developed in response to the need for social scientists to assist in understanding the role of cultural and scientific practices that introduce environmental pollutants into the human system, increasing the risk of diseases from cancer to cognitive disorders. In addition, cutting-edge research indicates that developing effective community engagement, understanding the processes or diffusion of innovation, may be more likely when social networks, rather than simply individuals, are considered as the targets of change. In sum, fresh approaches, developed by social network theorists, will be deployed to implement solutions developed by environmental scientists.
